Putting the hands in Anjali Mudra or Pranamasana (palms together in the heart area) is a sign of respect, adoration and is also a symbol of sincerity. When you combine Pranamasana and the word “Namaste” together-it is beyond compare.
Let us decipher this word together then. “Nama” simply means bow, then “as” refers to I and “te” means you. So, if we are going to combine these three into one, it form the word “Namaste” which means “I bow to you” or “I honor the place in you in which the entire universe dwells, I honor the place in you which is of love, of integrity, of wisdom and of peace.” When you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, we are One.”
Anjali Mudra is a gesture which is widely practiced or used in Asia. Moreover, it is also incorporated in Yoga Asanas. Anjali is a Sanskrit equivalent for “offering”, “salutation”, thus it was originated from the short word ‘anj” which means “to honour”. In addition to that contention, the gesture itself is also known as “hrdayanjali mudra” which conveys “reverence to the heart seal” (hrd is tantamount to “heart”) while atmanjali mudra means “reverence to the self seal” (atman, means “self”)
The simple word, Namaste is very grounding. It has an unfathomable meaning of respect to the other individual (and to God). If the gesture is expressed with this meaningful word, then that is truly incomparable.
